Lyrics
VERSE 1
Ah, holy Jesus, how hast Thou offended,
That mortal judgment hath on Thee descended?
By foes derided, by Thine own rejected,
O most afflicted.
VERSE 2
Who was the guilty? Who brought this upon Thee?
It is my treason, Lord, that hath undone Thee.
'Twas I, Lord Jesus. I it was denied Thee;
I crucified Thee.
VERSE 3
Lo, the Good Shepherd for the sheep is offered;
The slave hath sinned, and the Son hath suffered.
For my atonement, though I nothing heeded,
God interceded.
VERSE 4
For me, kind Jesus, was Thy incarnation,
Thy mortal sorrow, and Thy life's oblation;
Thy death of anguish and Thy bitter passion,
For my salvation.
VERSE 5
Therefore, dear Jesus, since I cannot pay Thee,
I do adore Thee, and will ever pray Thee.
Think on Thy pity and Thy love unswerving,
Not my deserving.

Scriptural Foundations
5But He was pierced for our offenses,
He was crushed for our wrongdoings;
The punishment for our well-being was laid upon Him,
And by His wounds we are healed.
11He came to His own, and His own people did not accept Him.
21And as they were eating, He said, “Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.” 22Being deeply grieved, they began saying to Him, each one: “Surely it is not I, Lord?”
16“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. 17For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him.
14I am the good shepherd, and I know My own, and My own know Me, 15just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.
20I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.
